Christmas Blooms

Merry Christmas! I made two holiday arrangements yesterday for Christmas gifts. The first is a taller arrangement of roses, gerbers, and hypericum berries.

The second arrangement is a smaller version with lilies, roses, gerbers and greens.

My favorite part of both arrangements? The cranberries!!

Class #4 - A Christmas Tree

In our forth and final class, we made a Boxwood Christmas tree.

We only needed Boxwood branches and a few baby roses to make this centerpiece. The most challenging part of this class was trying to get the shape of the tree.

The shape might not be perfect, but what Christmas tree is?? Merry Christmas!!

Happy Thanksgiving! Class #3

In spirit of Thanksgiving this week, we made a cornucopia in class #3."

We used two shades of snap dragon, orange tulips, purple delphiniums, some great yellow and green fillers, and a little dried wheat.

We also learned a fun fact - tulips continue to grow after they're cut!

Class #2 - Working with floral foam

In our second class we learned about working with floral foam. Floral foam is used to keep flowers hydrated as well as keep them in place when a water-only arrangement is not possible. This arrangement was made up of hydrangea, roses, gerber daisey's and several kinds of greens.

High Centerpiece Inspiration

I finally found some pictures for inspiration for the high centerpieces I am thinking of doing. I am planning on using either a cube or cylinder shaped tall vase, rather than a thin narrow pedestal vase. By using the tall cylinder vase, you have options such as, putting sea glass in the bottom, placing a light inside, submerging a strand of orchids, or just leaving the vase empty. The picture on the right shows both the look of a lighted vase and submerged flowers. I like the roses on top, but I would prefer a mix of hydrangea, roses, and possibly some white stock and curly willow. The picture below shows an example of mainly hydrangea (right picture) mixed with some curly willow stems. Also, you can see the difference between the cylinder vase on the right, and a square vase below. I guess what I envision for our tall arrangements would be a mix of these two together!

Centerpiece Inspiration - All White vs. Color

Although some might think it's too traditional, too plain, or just too white, I have always loved the look of an all white wedding. To me, all white flowers are elegant and timeless. I love the idea of mixed textures and shades of white and ivory.

However, this is not to say I don't love color! You probably already know that I picked a bright blue for the bridesmaid dresses. The best part is that each girl will be rocking her own dress in sticking with the non-matchy matchy idea. Which brings me back to the original question of do we go with all white flowers, mostly white with hints of peachy-pink colors, or bold jewel tones in purple, saphire and hot pink?

Low Centerpiece Inspiration

I thought I would post a few inspirational pictures for our wedding centerpieces. The current idea - I stress current because it changes on a daily basis - is to have 12 tables with 3 low rectangular or cube style vases of varying heights and 8 tables with 1 tall clear cylinder vase. The 3 low vases will have 1 type of flower per vase while the tall arrangements will be a mix of flowers, strongly dominated by white hydrangea. The first picture shows the idea of the 3 low rectangular vases with a pink/white mix of hydrangea, roses and orchids.

I'm also a big fan of the all white centerpiece with tulips, hydrangea and roses.

Class #1: Autumn Mix

Monday night was my first class in centerpiece design. The class is taught by an amazing Florist who followed her passion in floral design after years in teaching. One can only imagine how nice it must be to work with flowers every day after dealing with crazy teenagers every day for years!

The arrangement we worked on in the first class consisted of Black Magic Roses, orange roses, hypericum berries, mums, and other elements for unique touches such as silk leaves and curly willow stems. I'm not usually a huge fan of any kind of silk flowers, but the 4 leaves we stemmed and inserted added a nice harvest touch! Here's a few more pictures!
